Taking Action

Action Plan

Based on my research, one of the major issues with United States Healthcare is its inefficiency. Despite high spending, Americans are relatively unhealthy. By increasing coverage and making it more affordable, more people in the United States will be able to access preventive and primary care. According to the American College of Physicians, the one of the best ways to do this is by implementing a public option for people who are dissatisfied with their health insurance to purchase.

Other ways to improve coverage and quality of care include investing in enrollment advertising, creating automatic enrollment programs, and implementing a system for evaluating essential benefits every year. It is also important to address the underlying need for health insurance- the high cost of health care. Some goals aimed at decreasing costs include supporting all-payer claims databases to make it easier to standardize prices and eliminating high-cost surprise bills for out-of-network insurers.

While some of these goals are largely bipartisan, the biggest policy initiative I outlined was the public option. In general, policies such as the public option that focus on expanding government coverage appeal more to Democrats. Therefore, one of the best ways to promote my policy goals and move towards their eventual implementation is by supporting Democratic candidates with similar ideas. To do so, I have been phone banking for U.S. House Candidate Dr. Hiral Tipirneni. Dr. Tipirneni's district is important in the general election as well, and so I am hopeful that my efforts will help increase district support for other Democrats, such as Mark Kelly and Joe Biden.

Though important, a singular vote is not enough to meaningfully lead to the policy outcomes proposed. As demonstrated by the divisive policy plans, which ranged from repealing the Affordable Care Act to reduce government funding for health care to moving to a single-payer, government-funded "Medicare for All" approach, it will be increasingly necessary to support bipartisan efforts and cooperation among ideologically distant legislators to impact any change. To help with this, I composed letters to different Congress members from Arizona, summarizing the problems surrounding health care and the specific policy proposals that can help address them.

Between these two actions, I hope to move legislators towards my policy goals by helping to elect candidates with concurrent views and by demonstrating the commitment and knowledge Arizona voters have on health care policy.
